Arvig Communication Systems has approved an $80,000 corporate donation for the Battle Lake to Glendalough Bike and Pedestrian Trail project. The donation will be delivered to the City of Battle Lake to augment the $175,000 Federal Transportation Enhancement Grant that was previously awarded for the trail construction to be completed in 2013.

Arvig Communication Systems (ACS), which is headquartered in Perham, Minnesota, has made numerous donations throughout the region to promote the vitality of small communities. ACS Chief Operating Officer David Arvig offered these remarks, "Battle Lake has impressive plans for community and academic development, and we know that a bike and pedestrian trail tied to Glendalough State Park is a unique supporting element to those plans. Our employees at ACS are thrilled to be a contributor to a trail that will be used by the community, schools, and visitors to our area for decades to come."

The donation is a timely philanthropic boost for the overall trail concept that is designed to be a 12 mile paved loop from City of Battle Lake through Glendalough State Park. Otter Tail County officials have assisted local citizens over the past two years with the project. Otter Tail County Highway Engineer Rick West commented, "We've envisioned the value of a trail asset like this for many years, and it has been a pleasure to provide assistance to local residents who are working hard to see it become a reality."

Preliminary engineering surveys have already begun on the Battle Lake to Glendalough segment and a local trail committee is being formed to advise the engineering firm on specific amenities. An additional segment of the trail along County Highway #16 has received preliminary approval for a second Federal Transportation Enhancement Grant. State officials are also evaluating bonding for the portion of the trail within Glendalough State Park.

When asked about the Arvig donation, Battle Lake Mayor Chuck Reeve had this to say, "On behalf of the City of Battle Lake, and late Mayor Les Estes who was an advocate of this trail, we are deeply appreciative to Arvig Communication Systems. This entire trail concept is being made possible by leaders like ACS that share a deep commitment to the future of our area."
